Public Affairs Specialist

If selected for this position, you will serve as the public affairs specialist for the United States Attorney's Office (USAO), District of Alaska with responsibility for collecting, assembling, preparing and disseminating information concerning the various programs of the District. Typical work assignments will include:
- Coordinating and personally participating in media events on behalf of the USAO; - Arranging press conferences on litigative cases of concern to the public; - Developing news releases, briefing news media representatives and preparing written material for dissemination and publication; - Participating in planning, writing and editing news releases, features and non-legal articles for publication in printed media; - Exercising good judgement when dealing and speaking with media representatives about sensitive topics; - Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with members of the local and national news media, and specialized groups interested in the USAO's programs; - Utilizing major social media platforms; - Serving as the District's contact and coordinator for various public information requests; and - Providing a variety of office administrative support functions for the United States Attorney (USA). Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. GS-09:
To be qualified at the GS-09 level, you must have ONE (1) year of Specialized Experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal Service OR Education OR a Combination of Education and Experience. Specialized experience is defined as:
experience performing the following types of duties:
having direct experience in media relations or news reporting; gathering facts and drafting press releases or news stories for publication; editing written press releases, news stories or reports; assisting in statewide or regional efforts to convey complex information concerning an organization's initiatives, programs, and operations, monitoring and updating social media networking sites. This experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service and could have been gained in the federal, public, or private sector. Education:
Possess one of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Communications, Public Affairs):
Master's or equivalent graduate degree OR two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. Combination of Education and
Experience:
Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. In order to qualify based on a combination, graduate education must be in excess of the first full year. GS-11:
To be qualified at the GS-11 level, you must have ONE (1) year of Specialized Experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal Service OR Education OR a Combination of Education and Experience. Specialized Experience is defined as coordinating and personally participating in media events; establishing and maintaining media relationships; arranging for press conferences by contacting appropriate representatives of local or national media; planning, writing, and editing news releases; briefing news media representatives; preparing written material for dissemination and publication; coordinating and supporting social media operations and applications; evaluating overall effectiveness of media programs and developing ways to enhance the mission and programs of an organization. This experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service and could have been gained in the federal, public, or private sector. Education:
Possess one of the following types of education in a related field (e.g., Communications, Public Affairs):
Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree; OR 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree. Education at the graduate level must be in an accredited college or university and must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the duties of the position. Experience:
Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
