Summary:
Student Life & Leadership is currently recruiting for Student Building Managers to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Student Union.
Student Building Managers are responsible for working together and guiding a team of students who provide front-line customer service and event management in the Student Union.
Student Building Managers must be able to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously and to serve as a staff representative of the Student Union.
Student Building Managers are responsible for supervising student staff to run the Student Union Information Desk, Gear Room, UAA Esports Lounge, Coffee Shop, room requests, event set-ups, A/V support, and general Student Union operations.
They must be professional, reliable, and confidential, and able to carry out tasks and oversee others with little to no supervision.
This student staff position is 15-20 hours/week (up to 40hr/week in the summer) and starts at $12.
77/hour.
Duties:
Cash Handling:
The SM will reconcile cash register deposits at the end of the day.
Additionally, the SM will help employees run the registers when they require cash changes.
There will be times when the SM will need to run the register at the Information Desk and/or Seawolf Grounds coffee shop.
Essential Customer Service:
The Student Manager (SM) will serve as the primary staff contact for clients of the Student Union throughout their shift.
The SM will ensure client event spaces are set up correctly, test and troubleshoot A/V, and attend to client needs.
The SM will also assist with answering questions at the Information Desk, sundry sales at the coffee shop and Information Desk, and gear rentals.
Essential Management:
The SM will routinely check the Student Union building to ensure all operations can be carried out.
This includes unlocking and locking doors, straightening furniture, organizing spaces based on event layouts, reviewing posting boards for compliance with the UAA Posting Policy, walking through the Esports Lounge, etc.
Essential Professionalism:
The SM is the main staff contact when the professional staff leave the building at 5 pm.
The SM must be able to carry out assigned tasks without direct supervision and commit to providing an extraordinary experience to the clients and patrons of the building, highlighted in quality customer service and teamwork.
Essential Staff Supervision:
The SM will help train new employees that join staff, including Managers on Duty and Resource Assistants.
The SM will also report to the professional staff when other members of the employee team are late or do not show up to a shift.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Ability to perform and train others in basic customer service.
Ability to perform and train others in sales, cash handling, and reconciliation.
Possess knowledge of/ability to work with audiovisual equipment (preferred, but not required).
Ability to guide a student team of resource assistants and baristas to accomplish the goals of the Student Union.
Ability to exercise patience, focus, and understanding, and to lead others in stressful or emergency situations.
Ability to exercise independent judgment and good decision-making in working with customers and events in the Student Union.
Ability to carry out assigned tasks and projects with little to no supervision, and to delegate tasks to others.
Possess good organizational skills.

Required Education or Training To be eligible for student employment in Student Life & Leadership, an applicant must:
a.
Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment or b.
Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and c.
Have at least a 2.
0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee.
d.
Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer.
e.
An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.
Candidates must be flexible to work early mornings (6:
45 am), late evenings (11 pm), and/or weekends (Saturday and/or Sunday).
Candidates must be available for training prior to the beginning of the fall and spring semesters.
Salary Information:
This is a Student Assistant 2 position paying $12.
77 per hour.
