What You Will Be Doing The Department of Education & Early Development (DEED) is seeking a Technical Engineer/Architect to lead the School Facilities section.
This position serves as the Department's expert in matters pertaining to the design, construction, maintenance, and operation of high-performing, cost-effective K-12 schools.
You'll be forming relationships with design and facility management professionals at both the state and national levels as you develop criteria for the design, construction, and operation of public school facilities, including guidelines, handbooks, and standards.
This position supervises a staff of technical and professional personnel in the application of these criteria to funding requests and funded projects.
You will lead the evaluation of capital improvement project (CIP) applications and provide support, training, and outreach to school district personnel, industry organizations, the State Board of Education, and legislative committees regarding the Department's school capital funding programs and project execution requirements.
The incumbent of the position must be able to travel to remote locations, access construction in progress at unimproved sites, and access confined spaces in order to complete required inspections.
Travel occurs approximately on a quarterly basis and is typically limited to no more than a week in duration.

Experience:
Ability to interpret, explain, and apply the provisions of state statutes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Experience leading the work of staff at a variety of levels.
Experience procuring design and construction services and evaluation related documentation for clarity and conformance to the contract scope.
Knowledge of building codes and standards applicable to school facilities.
Experience representing an agency and the agency's position to public and private interests in a variety of formats including through telephone calls, emails, written position statements, and public presentations.

Minimum Qualifications Registration as a professional engineer (PE) or professional architect, and two years of professional engineering or architectural experience as an Engineer 1, Architectural Assistant 3 or higher with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere.

Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects, Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.
