Summary:
Join a dynamic team and help make a difference for Alaska! The University of Alaska Foundation seeks an experienced communications and public relations expert to coordinate and lead communication and outreach strategies for the UA Foundation and in support of philanthropic giving for the University of Alaska system that serves the entire state.
The manager of public relations reports to the president of the UA Foundation and is a member of the president's executive leadership team.
Duties:
1-70%Develop Communications and Public Relations Strategy:
This position will be responsible for the strategic development of UA Foundation communications/media relations and communications efforts including print and digital media, websites, and special projects.
Work closely with the UA Foundation president and leadership team to develop integrated communications and public relations strategies that support UA Foundation's mission.
Media/Messaging Management and Implementation:
Supervise and execute media pitches to publications and reporters for local media and higher ed industry publications.
Provide strategic direction for the UA Foundation's social media presence, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and other accounts.
Messaging and media efforts will be coordinated with the UA System Office of Public Affairs and universities when applicable.
Maintain up-to-date contact lists of media and key partner and stakeholder groups utilizing Raiser's Edge data, media listings, local and state government data, and other resources.
Coordinate Storytelling/Messaging:
Coordinate with the Donor Relations, Development, Communications, and Public Relations teams across the UA system to help tell the stories of philanthropy and its impact on the universities and the donors who give generously to make it possible.
Work closely with the Chief Donor Relations Officer to develop strategy and coordinate regular and special donor communications.
Responsible for the strategy, design, and publication of the UA Foundation Annual Report.
Work closely with the AVP, Development, and Campaign Director to coordinate activity with fundraising and campaign priorities.
Work closely with the UA Office of Public Affairs, UA Public Relations Council, and each university's communications and public relations teams.
Convey the work of the UA Foundation to various audiences in compelling and thoughtful ways.
Essential 30%Event Management:
Plans, organizes, and executes various events and activities hosted by the UA Foundation and Board of Directors.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Demonstrated knowledge of techniques and industry standards for all aspects of communications projects relevant to the position, including writing; editing; visual, print and electronic graphic design, web materials and audio-visual productions; news and feature stories; and marketing and advertising.
Proven ability to manage team communications efforts.
Proven communications strategy development, writing skills and the ability to identify/place compelling editorial opportunities in mainstream and social media.
Ability to organize, prepare and present comprehensive public information and outreach programs utilizing multiple media; ability to advise academic and program-level administrators regarding media relations and communications issues and programs.
Ability to communicate effectively in multiple media (e.
g.
, verbally, in writing, graphically, electronically.
) Ability to write news releases, articles, reports, and promotional materials; ability to establish and maintain professional and effective working relationships with unit, university, and UA system colleagues, media, and the public.
Ability to determine communication program needs and select effective methods and techniques for disseminating information.
Sound understanding of digital media platforms and the importance of working collaboratively across channels.
Proven communications strategy development, writing skills, and the ability to identify/place compelling editorial opportunities in mainstream and social media.
Ability to successfully plan and organize small and large events.
Ability to manage project budgets.
Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work independently and to meet deadlines despite competing demands.
Excellent client management skills and judgment.

Required Experience & Education:
Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, media, or a related field with a minimum of six years of experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required.
Minimum:
Six years of progressively responsible communications and public relations experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience is required.
This may include writing and editorial experience, agency experience public relations , event management, and/or higher education, philanthropic, or public affairs/government relations experience.
Preferred:
Eight years of experience.
Media relations/press officer and public relations experience.
Work experience in higher education and/or familiarity with the University of Alaska.
Strong knowledge of Alaska with experience working with diverse internal and external partners and stakeholders.
Experience in development or philanthropy.
Salary Information:
This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and a full employee benefits package.
New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 81, based on education and experience.
