Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959 This position is located at the RCS Vet Center in Anchorage, Alaska. The Vet Center provides counseling and therapeutic services for stress disorders (PTSD), other psychiatric disorders and/or readjustment problems. As a Readjustment Counseling Therapist, you will be responsible for providing Veterans with community outreach, counseling, therapy, treatment and direct services and referral to VA and community resources. You will provide counseling services to clients with a variety of issues that require specialized readjustment counseling and related services. Many of the clients have highly complex and diversified psychological/sociological problems that require reaching independent conclusions. Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Seeks out eligible Veterans, ascertains their need for services and informs them of the Vet Center program;
Interviews Veterans and their significant others to determine readjustment needs;
Develops comprehensive treatment plans for adjustment and/or readjustment;
Provides individual and conjoint therapy, intensive group counseling, substance abuse counseling, etc.;
Provides crisis intervention, stabilization and follow-up to Veterans and their significant others which requires independent judgment, quick response and innovative and carefully controlled psychological assistance;
Determines appropriate referral resources and referring Veterans and their significant others to appropriate VA and community resources; and
Plans, organizes and conducts outreach activities with Veterans, community and service organizations, business and industry, professionals and the public.
Note: Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) is currently 5.57% and is subject to change in the future.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
A. Bachelor's degree (or higher) in a behavioral or social science; or a related discipline appropriate to the position (Readjustment Counseling Therapist). (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

B. Combination of education and creditable specialized experience of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field in order to meet the basic requirements for this position. (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

At least four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT
Experience:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has provided you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a Readjustment Counseling Therapist. Qualifying experience includes establishing outreach services with community resources; providing counseling for clients including individual, group and family intervention; contacting clients and their significant others to ascertain their needs; identifying various readjustment problems (i.e. alcoholism, drug abuse, marital, emotional, etc.); assisting in obtaining treatment for clients through federal, state and local resources; providing therapy and clinical counseling to clients with psychological and social problems; and documenting and maintaining case files and submitting reports.
A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Successful completion of 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education or a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in rehabilitation counseling or counseling psychology.

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:
Skill in providing services to various client populations including psychiatric, substance abuse and inadequate social-psychological readjustment.
Knowledge of the theory, principles, practices, ethics and techniques of counseling sufficient to be able to intercede on behalf of clients and their family regarding assistance with a variety of issues (e.g. housing, finances, employment, etc.).
Skill in conducting community outreach.
Ability to work with other health care professionals in order to meet client and/or family needs and implement a suitable treatment plan.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work is primarily sedentary, but does involve frequent trips into the community or to the VA Medical Center. Driving a government vehicle and irregular working hours are often required.
